Merrithew Intro to Fascial Movement Workshop: Saturday 16 February: 1.00pm-3.00pm (2hrs)

A primer for the comprehensive Merrithew Fascial Movement Foundation Course.
Fascia, the most ubiquitous connective tissue in the body, is creating a buzz in the fitness industry. But what is fascia? Why do fitness professionals need to know about it? What role does it play in movement and sports performance? This primer workshop, created by the Merrithew team, demonstrates there is much more to fascia than self-myofascial release, demystifying the fascial system and defining the role it plays in the human body.
Through movement, we’ll explore fascial movement variables such as; Bounce, Sense, Expand, and Hydrate. Discover how adding these movement variables to your programming can enhance mobility, strength and durability. This two-hour workshop consisting of theory and application is suitable for fitness professionals with prior fascial knowledge, as well as those to whom fascia is new. It provides a brief preview of topics that are more deeply explored in the 16-hour Fascial Movement Foundation Course.

Learning objectives

  • Review basic fascial anatomy, identify the many roles fascia plays within the body, and discuss its relevance to movement
  • Learn how fascia is instrumental in functional daily life, sports performance and post-rehabilitation
  • Begin to discover fascial movement variables and how they can be used to augment all programming

STOTT PILATES Essential Matwork with a Fascial Focus: Saturday 16 February: 3.30pm-5.30pm (2hrs)

This workshop provides instructors tools to incorporate new fascial research concepts within the body of the STOTT PILATES Essential Matwork repertoire. Following the Essential Matwork order, participants explore how exercise essences can be enhanced with new fascial research concepts, inspiring a new movement experience. Created by the experts at Merrithew, discover seamless movement flowing exercise sequences that take the body through multiple planes of movement. This workshop will spark creativity in programming and allow participants to tap into their innate body wisdom to find alternate variations that best suit their movement potential on any given day.

Learning objectives

  • Review the essence of selected STOTT PILATES Essential Matwork exercises.
  • Discuss current concepts in fascial research and their application to STOTT PILATES Matwork exercises.
  • Experience movement sequences that target the neuromyofascial system.
  • Discuss how exercises can be altered to access movement potential.

STOTT PILATES Pre-Natal on the Reformer: Sunday 17 February: 9.00am-11.00am (2hrs)

Learn the benefits of taking moms-to-be from traditional Matwork variations to select exercise modifications on the Reformer in this workshop, developed by the Merrithew team. Using current exercise guidelines provided by the ACOG and bearing in mind common anatomical and physiological changes, appropriate STOTT PILATES® exercise adaptations are explored using the Reformer in innovative and beneficial ways. Workout safety and effectiveness remain paramount and the client’s risk factors, pre-pregnancy fitness level, health concerns and fitness goals are to be taken in to account when creating new and ongoing programs.

Learning objectives

  1. Apply the Five Basic Principles of STOTT PILATES to specific exercises on the Reformer
  2. Understand movement essence and exercise goals for the prenatal client.
  3. Explore how exercise choices are made for the prenatal client and what modifications may need to be incorporated.
  4. Hear cues and corrections for safety and effectiveness.

STOTT PILATES Pre-Natal on the Mat: Sunday 17 February: 11.30am-1.30pm (2hrs)

This interactive seminar, developed by the Merrithew team, draws upon the most current medical information, exercise guidelines and research available on pregnancy and movement. Appropriate STOTT PILATES® Matwork exercise adaptations are explored and programming concepts for teaching small groups and private clients are discussed. Anatomical and physiological changes, risk factors and movement considerations are also discussed with an eye to providing a safe and effective workout throughout all trimesters and provide strategies for building new pre-natal programs as well as enhancing those already in progress.

Learning objectives

  • Understand appropriateness of STOTT PILATES Matwork as well as possible contraindications during pregnancy.
  • Learn about physiological changes throughout all three trimesters.
  • Explore specific exercise modifications on the Mat.
  • Apply the STOTT PILATES Five Basic Principles of stabilization to prenatal exercises.

STOTT PILATES Post-Natal Pilates: Sunday 17 February: 2.00pm-4.00pm (2hrs)

Most women are able to return to exercise four to six weeks after a regular birth or when they get clearance from their physician. Many of the exercises performed during the second and third trimester of pregnancy will be suitable now, but other exercises can be added to focus on reactivating and stabilizing the pelvic floor, transversus abdominis and obliques as well as developing lumbo-pelvic stability. This gentle but effective workout, developed by the Merrithew team, incorporates Toning Balls to get new moms back on the right track.

  1. Apply the Five Basic Principles of STOTT PILATES to exercises specific to the post-natal client.
  2. Discover how to modify for the needs of this special population.
  3. Understand how to incorporate Toning Balls in a post-natal workout.
  4. Discuss special considerations for post-natal concerns.
