Postural Theory & Application to Pilates Exercises Workshop: Friday 14 June 2019: 1.00pm-5.30pm (4hrs)

Posture Review

This hands-on workshop, developed by the Merrithew™ team, outlines the importance of postural analysis in programming STOTT PILATES® workouts. Review ideal posture as well as specific deviations found in flat back, sway back and kyphosis-lordosis posture types. Discover how muscle imbalances typically manifest in static posture and practice conducting postural analysis. Finally, explore common Pilates exercise choices and modifications to accommodate these imbalances and work toward restoring adequate length and strength in the musculature over time.

Learning objectives

  • Review the steps in conducting a formal postural analysis.
  • Learn how to identify muscular imbalances as they relate to faulty posture.
  • Practice locating bony landmarks and palpating structures.
  • Understand how postural issues play into exercise programming.

Reformer with Fitness Circle Workshop: Saturday 15 June 2019: 11.30am-1.30pm (2hrs)

In this workshop, developed by the Merrithew team, learn how the Fitness Circle® brings variety and challenge into group or private Reformer settings. Add more challenge to adductors and abductors of the peripheral limbs as well as assist in activating the core. The Fitness Circle® resistance ring reinforces correct muscle firing patterns and helps ensure correct positioning while adding an element of fun and variety to each workout.

Learning objectives

  • Understand how the STOTT PILATES Five Basic Principles apply to exercises using the Reformer and Fitness Circle
  • Discover how the Fitness Circle can be used in innovative movement sequences
  • Utilize the resistance ring to increase challenge to upper and lower body respectively
  • Learn how to incorporate these movements into a complete Reformer workout to create variety and challenge

Group Reformer Classes: Teaching Skills & Programming Choices Workshop: Saturday 15 June 2019: 2.00pm-4.00pm (2hrs)

Teaching group classes on the Reformer can be challenging. How do you ensure all your clients get a good workout safely in a group situation? With this workshop, developed by the Merrithew team, develop the skills to give each client individual attention while keeping the class moving and providing challenge at every level. Discover how offering effective cues and corrections can allow you to safely progress your clients through a series of Reformer classes. Learn how creative programming can allow each member to realize potential and achieve success.

Learning objectives

  1. Review differences between teaching privates and teaching group classes
  2. Learn cueing skills, correction methods and motivational skills that work best in group situations
  3. Review class plans that allow your group class to progress methodically and safely
  4. Learn how to apply the Five Basic Principles of STOTT PILATES® to a group class

Jumpboard Strength & Conditioning Workshop: Saturday 15 June 2019: 4.30pm-6.30pm (2hrs)

Learn programming to improve the strength and stability of hip, knee and ankle joints in both supine and standing positions in this workshop developed by the Merrithew team. The use of a Jumpboard with the Reformer allows the hip joint to be closer to an anatomically neutral alignment when transferring forces from the soles of the feet up through the body, promoting good biomechanics of the entire lower kinetic chain. Increased spring resistance emphasizes strengthening of the arms, shoulder girdle and legs.

Learning objectives

  • Apply the Five Basic Principles of the STOTT PILATES® method to exercises on the Jumpboard
  • Understand movement essence and exercise goals as applied to athletic conditioning
  • Discover how simple moves and increased tension can address specific strengthening goals
  • Learn how to alter starting positions to increase core strength and stability

Dynamic Armchair Pilates Workshop: Sunday 16 June 2019: 8.30am-10.30am (2hrs)

If restricted mobility does not permit a client to lie on the floor or other equipment, this workshop, developed by the Merrithew team, shows exercise variations in an upright, seated position. In addition to exploring movements incorporating the gentle resistance of the STOTT PILATES® Flex-Band® exerciser, participants work through a number of exercises performed in a supported standing position to help develop balance and coordination.

Learning objectives

  1. Apply the STOTT PILATES Five Basic Principles of stabilization to select seated exercises
  2. Lean supported movements in a standing position focusing on proper form
  3. Understand why STOTT PILATES is beneficial in cases of restricted mobility and how to modify for this clientele
  4. Learn cues and corrections for safety and effectiveness

Armchair Pilateswith Handweights Workshop: Sunday 16 June 2019: 11.00am-1.00pm (2hrs)

When working with older exercisers, programs need to be adjusted, sometimes dramatically, to accommodate those with limited mobility. Using light hand-held weights, this workout, developed by the Merrithew team, targets core strength and stability along with peripheral joint mobilization all from a seated position. Exercises are designed to re-connect mind and body, target and improve the functional capacity of the older participant through graded strength training, proprioceptive awareness and joint range of motion, as well as bring about a general sense of well-being. Discover how to maximize functional health, balance, coordination and flexibility in a workout aimed at keeping the body moving.

Learning objectives

  1. Apply the STOTT PILATES Five Basic Principles of stabilization to select seated exercises
  2. Understand how movement essence and exercise goals are beneficial for a specialized population
  3. Learn why the use of hand weights is appropriate for maintaining strength and muscle tone
  4. Understand how to modify exercises for clients with restricted mobility

Flexion-Free Pilates Workshop: Sunday 16 May 2019: 1.30pm-3.30pm (2hrs)

Fitness and Pilates Instructors meet a variety of clients who are restricted in their movements for a variety of reasons. Often, spinal flexion is contraindicated due to some specified concern. Learn how to modify Pilates exercises in a range of intensity levels to create workouts that achieve the primary goal of limiting spinal flexion while providing an effective full-body workout. Small handweights, Stability Cushions and the Flex-Band® exerciser are used to increase upper body resistance while further challenging the stability of the torso in a neutral alignment.

Learning objectives

  1. Discuss how the STOTT PILATES® Five Basic Principles apply when movement is restricted
  2. Discover how to create a challenging workout without altering spinal alignment
  3. Learn to incorporate small handweights in a full flexion-free workout
  4. Explore exercise modifications in order to keep the workout safe
